Mikumba Diving – Our Story

Our story started in 2016 when the founder of Mikumba Diving, Fredrik bought his first boat.

But the story really starts way back when he started diving at the age of 12 and since then it’s been a major part of his life.

In 2011 he became an scuba diving instructor and started his diving career on Mabul Island in Malaysian Borneo guiding and teaching, around the world famous Sipadan Island.

In 2013 Fred made his way to Indonesia and immediately fell in love with the spectacular archipelago.

Until he returned home to cold Sweden to visit family he hadn’t realised how much his heart was still in Indonesia, so he packed up his diving gear again and went back to explore some of the best diving in Indonesia – Raja Ampat & Komodo.

It wasn’t just the diving that had stolen his heart, it was the culture, the people and the extraordinary nature above and below the surface (as well as a sweet girl from Bandung, who is now his wife and mother of his two kids).

After several years of diving in Komodo National Park and Raja Ampat he decided to follow his dream of offering incredible diving experiences for others on his own boat.

In 2016 he travelled to the famous boat building community Bulukumba where he bought Mikumba Ratu Laut and with a professional and experienced team Mikumba Diving was created. Ever since then we have continued to share our passion of diving on running budget liveaboards in Raja Ampat, daily dive trips and liveaboards in Komodo and running expeditons twice a year between the two.

In 2018, after three great expeditions across the Banda Sea, two seasons in Raja Ampat and one season of operating boat trips in Komodo it was time for a new challenge: to expand and set up a Mikumba Dive Centre in Labuan Bajo, the gateway to the legendary Komodo National Park. During 2018 we have expanded our crew of passionate divers and started offering daily diving trips, a budget liveaboard and a mid-range liveaboard in Komodo. With a brand new dive centre in Labaun Bajo as a center point we’re now teaching all courses from Discover Scuba Dives up to Dive Master Internships with experienced PADI instructors.

But the story doesn’t end here. Right now Mikumba Diving is in process of building a dream liveaboard boat from scratch. Fred went back to Bulukumba in South Sulawesi, home of the Bugis people, famous for their boat building skills and started building our 3rd boat – Ratu Ombak, which is due to be ready for sea in March 2019.
