Conservation & Community Activities

At Mikumba Diving we are passionate about conservation and are becoming increasingly concerned with the rising threats our marine environment is facing in Komodo National Park and Raja Ampat.

We employ mainly local people at Mikumba Diving and try to give something back to the community where we live and work.  We are currently sponsoring 2 people through their Dive Master Internship and 2 of our existing Dive Masters to become Instructors.

As well as providing them with employment opportunities they will become future ambassadors for the ocean

and continue to raise awareness of the importance of conservation and recycling within their communities.

By diving with us you are directly benefitting the local community and helping to preserve the marine environment for future generations.

As a dive centre we are determined to do our part to help, and are actively involved with a number of groups and activities in Komodo and Raja Ampat where we make a real difference.

The Dive Operators Community of Komodo (DOCK) is dedicated to the Komodo National Park and its Marine Environment.  Their ethic is one of safety, professionalism, and environmental and social sustainability.

It’s members have agreed to stricter guidelines to ensure that our operations are compliant with international best practice, and above and beyond the required standards in this vibrant and rapidly developing destination.

We are proud to be DOCK members and to be involved in projects dedicated to protecting the underwater world in Komodo.

Barefoot Conservation run programs for volunteers in Raja Ampat for people who want to work in marine biology or conservation.  They gain practical marine conservation experience in one of the world’s most stunningly pristine and remote locations for marine research, work with experienced marine scientists and the local community on vital marine conservation projects, and learn marine biology field skills essential for scientific and marine conservation research.

We work with them on several projects and also provide training for their guides and they often join our liveaboard trips.

Marine Megafauna Foundation play a critical role in the health of our oceans’ vast ecosystems, and thus the survival of all marine life.  The stakes have never been higher for these ocean giants, the majestic manta, which is why the Marine Megafauna Foundation is on a mission to save them using pioneering research, education, and sustainable conservation solutions.

We partner up with the MMF on our boats when we visit the manta dive sites and they give our guests a presentation on diving with mantas, their behaviour and the risks they face.  We also record all our manta sightings from every dive and feed this information back to the MMF for analysis and tracking purposes.

We are excited to tell you we are soon to become a Shark Guardian Dive Centre.  Through education they are trying to promote awareness of the importance of sharks in the ecosystem and why they need to be protected.

We help with donations for projects and also by recording all shark sightings from every dive and provide this information to them.

For more information on their projects please visit their website.

We support Trash Hero Indonesia through donations and also joining their regular beach cleanups.  We also organise regular cleanups on our livebaord whenever we do our land based hiking activities.

We’re proud to be one of the few dive centres to offer day trips in association with Coral Guardian.  We run chartered trips where we can take up to 16 people to spend an amazing day on Nusantara and learn more about coral.

We go to Pulau Hatamin and have a presentation from a Coral Guardian representative about their coral restoration project around Labuan Bajo.
