The Hammerhead Expedition

Alor – Banda Sea – Alor – Maumere

Have you ever seen hammerhead sharks?

Mikumba Diving is organising a special expedition, in addition to our Ring of Fire expeditions, and we’ve decided to go and look for some big stuff!

This is a trip to the Banda Sea, and we’re going to be going DEEP… these schools of hammerheads can hang out at 40-50m depth, so some of these dives will be deco dives.  There are several atolls, totally remote, that drop down to 2,000m, so they’re the perfect place to find what we’re looking for.  We’ve been lucky enough to see 100+ hammerheads together on one of our expeditions, so if we’re really lucky, we could be seeing even more!  Don’t worry we are thinking of safety at all times and just in case we have 3 x 50 litre tanks of emergency oxygen on board and also stage tanks available.

We’re going to be looking around Nil Desperandum, Gili Manuk, Hatta Atoll and more.

The exact route will be weather dependent, but if we can get further east we’ll go to the famous snake island – Gili Manuk, an active volcano where you can see hundreds of sea snakes on one dive alone.  When we start to run low on water and food we’ll head to Alor and visit the headhunter village followed by a night dive.

The water temperature can vary – down to 17 degrees in Alor or up to 28 in other areas, but that means the big stuff comes in – we’ll even have the chance of seeing mola molas – the oceanic sunfish, and possibly even sperm whales – we’ve snorkelled with orcas and false killer whales here in the past too.

On the way back from Alor to Maumere we’ll stop off at Kumba – an active volcano that usually erupts once or twice an hour!  If time and weather allow, we’ll do 3 dives around her, and stay for sunset so you can experience something you might never see again.

This trip will be on one of our new liveaboards – KLM Arumi, a 22m long, 6 m wide phinisi schooner only 3 months old.  She has 3 twin cabins and a dorm, can take 14 but for this trip we’re limiting it to 12 guests.  All cabins have aircon and private toilet, and hot water showers.

Please note, this trip is only available for experienced divers, to join us you will need at least 100 dives and certified AOW with Deep and Nitrox – we can teach both on the boat for $200 each or $350 for both.

As safety is our primary concern for our guests and staff we have strict guidelines that need to be followed.  Before your booking can be accepted you will need to complete a medical statement and get clearance from your Doctor stating you are fit to dive if you answer YES to any of the questions on the form.

If it turns our that this is incomplete, or you do not have medical clearance from your Doctor we will have to cancel your booking without refund.  We aren’t doctors, and medical staff in remote places are not the same as qualified diving doctors in the West.  It is not fair for anybody – neither our guests nor our staff – for you to put your safety at risk, even if it IS the trip of a lifetime.

While we aim to have as much fun and excitement on the expeditions as possible, the health and safety our all our guests is of the upmost importance to us at Mikumba Diving, and we are serious about ensuring you are well looked after on our liveaboards.

Most expenses are included:

  • Bed / Room
  • All meals
  • 2 sheets, pillow and towel – but unfortunately no laundry machine, so please bring your own sleeping bag/liner
  • Soft drinks and alcohol are not included – you are welcome to bring your own
  • Amazing diving 🙂

Not included in the price of the expedition:

  • Flights – but we can recommend who to fly with
  • Park fees
  • Soft drinks and alcohol
  • Land based accommodation
  • Tips (for crew and guides)
  • Any other expenses

Mikumba Diving will always do everything we can to ensure your safety, but accidents can still happen.

Force Majeure and Acts of God are also a possibility, and there is nothing we can do to stop these from happening.

You will need to purchase sufficient insurance to cover all eventualities – diving incidents, flight cancellations and possible evacuations.  We recommend using DAN for diving, and Nomads for the rest, as they provide good cover.

Although we may be in remote places, we do have continual contact with our office via satellite phone, and can help with arranging any assistance that may be needed.

Before booking please have a look at our Terms & Conditions.
